LAB ZW

The ZW Lab was established in 2024. Starting with two lab technicians, it has grown into a stable team of approximately 15 members, including exploratory post-doctoral researchers, curious Ph.D. students, and supportive lab technicians. Our research leverages in situ cryo-electron tomography (Cryo-ET) to investigate viral-host interactions within virus-infected host cells. Guided by the principle Mens sana in corpore sano("A healthy mind in a healthy body"), we prioritize both scientific rigor and well-being. While dedicated to advancing research, lab members also actively engage in sports and team building activities to foster collaboration and balance.

Research

While decades of research have revealed viral entry and fusion mechanisms, post-entry processes-genome release, assembly, and egress-remain poorly understood. This knowledge gap hinders the development of antiviral drugs targeting these stages. To address this, our lab integrates single-particle cryo-EM, cryo-ET, and protein interaction tools to resolve in situ structures of understudied pandemic-potential viruses (e.g., Langya henipavirus, Alongshan virus) and their host interactions. By combining structural biology with immunology and translational platforms, we aim to build a comprehensive antiviral defense strategy against spillover events. We are also developing an ultra-fast cryo-ET  sample preparation system to enable time-resolved in situ studies, capturing viral-host  interactions at precise timepoints. These advancements will not only clarify viral life cycles but also pioneer methodologies for broader applications in cellular biology.
