Royal Never Give Up
Songlin Shi is from Xi’an, Shaanxi. He joined Lab ZW in his first year of Ph.D. study in the Westlake University. He got his bachelor of science degree in the Southern University of Science and Technology. He did some research in Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, CAS, for his graduation paper.
Songlin wants to explore the mechanism of virual infection at structural level, and he also shows great interest in the influence during and after the viruses fuse into cells. He is curious about the intracelluar molecular fuctions of the virus’ life track in cells, especially the interaction mechanism between virus and intracellular protein or other substances, which may cause cell death, inflammatory reaction or the influence on virus release and evolution.
Out of research, he is a sportsman, being skilled in football, badminton, volleyball, and E-sports. He is a national third-class 11-member football referee and a referee of the Honor of Kings National Competition. He is qualified as a Red Cross first aid responder and always ready to help anyone in emergency.
Songlin is a fan of the Arsenal Football Club, he hopes to have a chance to watch a match in the Emirates Stadium. He also loves RNG E-sports team and takes the team’s name Royal Never Give Up as a motto.
Yudun Ke
Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica
Structural biology research on GPCRs
Mainly involved in protein expression purification
Yudun Ke is a PhD student of Westlake University, class of 2024. He graduated from Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
During his master's degree, he was mainly involved in structural biology research on GPCRs, utilizing cryo-electron microscopy to resolve the conformational information of two types of GPCRs. Single particle cryo-electron microscopy is mainly used to analyze the conformational state of proteins at a fixed point in time, but he is more interested in knowing the dynamic conformational changes of proteins in a certain time dimension in their native environment, which can reveal the complex interaction patterns in living organisms more intuitively. In the lab, he is mainly involved in protein expression purification, sample preparation for cryo-electron microscopy and data analysis.
In addition to research, Yu Dun likes to challenge new things and experience the heartbeat rhythm brought by the unknown world. He has a wide range of hobbies, badminton, basketball, table tennis, swimming, photography, hiking, movies, etc., which allow him to enjoy this tired but wonderful world.
Mengxue Wang
Mengxue Wang is a Research Assistant in the group. She holds a Master's degree from Huazhong Agricultural University. Her research focuses on the development of advanced tools for particle picking in cryo-electron tomography (cryoET). This work involves two primary aspects: the generation of synthetic cryoET datasets for training and validation purposes, and the design and implementation of novel neural network architectures for robust particle identification. The aim of her research is to contribute to the enhancement of efficiency and accuracy within the cryoET workflow, thereby supporting new discoveries in structural biology. While acknowledging the inherent challenges of research, Mengxue finds significant motivation and satisfaction in achieving incremental progress and breakthroughs. Outside of her research activities, Mengxue enjoys hiking, cycling, and exploring culinary experiences.
